Midsummer Night's Dream [Jan. 4th, 2004|09:11 pm]
Minda Lisle
[Current Mood |contemplativecontemplative]

We had our first rehearsal today for Midsummer Night's Dream. It went pretty well, although there wasn't actually much practicing of lines. A lot of time was devoted to digging through the costume chest Dumbledore gave Remus, and I am exceedingly pleased with my Oberon costume, though there was some exchanging of smaller items to make some costumes look better. Those who hadn't chosen a part yet matched costumes to roles and tried to decide who to be.

When we did get around to lines, Sirius told me he'd never imagined Oberon using such a sarcastic tone of voice. I think I'll ask Hugh later if I can borrow that annotated Midsummer Sirius gave him, so I can see a bit more of Oberon's personality.

The very odd thing about playing Oberon (Auberon is the proper spelling, but for the sake of the play I'll stick with Shakespeare) is that Fairies (whatever spelling you use) are real, and the oldest Muggle tales have got them mostly right. Being from Ireland, I know this for a certainty-- there are fairy rings in the woods behind my house and a stone circle several miles away. Sometimes (on Midsummer's Eve, especially) we can hear music, and we're absolutely forbidden to go outside on those nights. From what my father's said, there are wizards around the globe, but especially in Ireland and Britain, whose job it is to hide the fairy places and keep Muggles and wizards alike away from them. I think he may be one of them, but he refuses to tell me.

Musing on that, I retreated to the dormitory after dinner and spent about half an hour staring into that story/music globe Hugh gave me for Christmas. I've an inkling that it senses your mood, because it was playing fairy dance music. My dreams tonight will be odd, I think.

So who, exactly, is involved? I did notice that the common room was a great deal quieter than usual tonight, but I couldn't be sure who outside of my House was missing. Have you decided on the casting yet?

Well, Minda is Oberon, Chaeyz is Titania, I'm Nick Bottom, Sirius is Robin Goodfellow, a.k.a. Puck, Remus says he'll play anyone but a girl, and I'm not sure who James and Peter are going to be playing yet. Plus there were a number of people who came to see the rehearsal out of sheer curiosity. No idea how many of them will wind up being in the play.

We could use more actresses. Do you fancy playing Hermia or Helena? They're the two mortal heroines. Or you could be a fairy, or even a comic artisan like me.

Chaeyz is not playing Titania, Jenyae is. Where do you people get these ideas from?

I will happily play whatever part you need, by the way, but I am not playing Titania because Jenyae volunteered for that part a very long time ago. She did. Way back in the beginning. She said, "'To save your life in this extremity, this favor will I do you...' That's from Taming of the Shrew, by the way." Or something like that. And then she went on to say that she would play Titania and that then Remus wouldn't have to.

Chaeyz is not Titania. Chaeyz is something else, whatever is needed. How can I put it so that it is clear, understandable and noticeable?

Eeesh. Sorry, Chaeyz. I think it's the AE in both your names. That, and the fact that after spending a day and a half with you, your name leaps more readily to my mind than Jenyae's. (Also, I've not known either of you very long, not that that's a proper excuse.)

I do apologise most humbly to both of you. Honestly.

And I am glad that you want to play a part. That's very good news.

I second Hugh in saying you play one of the leading girls. I'd vote you for Hermia, myself, because she's by far the better of the two; she gets to run off with her true love, and all Helena does is whinge about how Demetrius doesn't like her and how she'll be his dog and stuff. It's rather degrading for dogs and decent girls everywhere. Actually, Lily, d'you think you could come up with some girl who won't mind making a fool of herself? Or if you know anyone who wants to play Demetrius, and then find someone who likes that person to play Helena. That's probably the only way we'll get a Helena at all.

Er, I suppose I could play one of them. Either one. I wasn't really expecting to be part of it, but, all right, if you want me to.

...And no, I don't know anyone who would like particularly to be Demetrius. I'll ask around.

You should visit the Fairy Steps at Beetham. The Steps are on the Lancashire/Cumbria border, and are short, narrow, twisting steps carved between two close-together walls of stone. It's said that the fairies will grant a wish to anyone who can climb the Steps without help...and without touching either side. NOT easy.

Here's a Muggle photograph of the Steps:

I really would love to, but my dad gets very twitchy about things like that. Since (I think) he's got a lot of experience with fairies and stone circles and he thinks having more to do than necessary with them is tempting fate.

That and my sister tried to shove me into a fairy ring when I was five. There's that, too.

Besides, I really can't think of anything I'd wish for. More accepting purebloods would be nice, but that's a broad thing. The only personal thing would be to have Josh Mittelmann go absolutely bonkers and spend the rest of his life gibbering in a corner instead of causing pain for other people.

I didn't mean that. Not seriously, anyway. Nice mental picture, though.

Or I could wish my sister was nicer, but then I'd know it was because of the fairies' spell rather than her actual personality. Which would sort of spoil it.

When people always asked me what I wished for, I never did know.

My, surprising what you find in anothers journal; concerning the thoughts to my role as TITANIA.

Having been the one who was trying on the Titania outfit, I am a bit surprised that you found your thoughts thinking that Chaeyz, and not I, was playing Titania.

But I am not so surprised to the fact that you did not see me at the rehearsal. I had received permission to leave early (as soon as I tried on my costume, found it fit, and approved of such costume) from Remus. I was hardly there for more than twenty minutes.

Also, Minda: I didn't know that you were from Ireland as well! What region, or Clan, might I ask?

Truly,
~Jenyae
